About Norwegian Forest Cats

Norwegian Forest Cats are a naturally evolved breed of cat. They have lived in the Scandinavian forests since ancient times, and developed longer, warmer coats and large furry paws in order to survive in cold, harsh winter weather. Ancient Norse mythology depicts the Goddess Freya driving a chariot driven by cats. Vikings certainly brought cats with them on their worldwide travels to help protect food stocks from vermin. Today cats resembling Norwegian Forest cats can be found roaming the forests, protecting farmer's crops, and warming themselves in pools of sunlight in homes and gardens throughout the northern reaches of Europe.

The Norwegian Forest breed first began to have some recognition before WWII, but during the war, this work was put on hold. In 1977 the breed was first recognized in Europe, and in 1987 in the US.
